Explore Old Goa, the exposition venue with us
The 18th exposition of the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier is just around the corner. Hordes of pilgrims as well as tourists are set to embark on a long journey to Old Goa, a holy place that lies in Goa.
The exposition venue is the only location in Goa to have several religious monuments collectively declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site called Churches and Convents of Goa, making Old Goa a historically and culturally significant place.
Old Goa houses many striking architectural marvels featuring Baroque, Manueline, Tuscan and Corinthian elements.
We decided to explore these seven landmarks, consisting of churches and chapels and take you on a quick visual tour of this historic place.
Hence, our Old Goa trail includes seven stops: the Basilica of Bom Jesus, the Church of St Augustine, the Church of St Cajetan, Se Cathedral, the Convent and Church of St Francis of Assisi, the Church of Our Lady of Rosary and the Chapel of St Catherine.
Besides being places of worship, these structures are of consequence architecturally, serving as reminders of Goa's rich and layered history. So, let's learn a little about each of them.
1. Basilica of Bom Jesus
The Basilica will be the central backdrop of the exposition as the sacred relics of St Francis Xavier are kept here. It stands as an outstanding example of Baroque architecture.
2. St Augustine Tower
The tower of St Augustine originally served as part of a much larger church and convent complex.
3. Convent and Church of St Francis of Assisi
This church combines Tuscan and Manueline styles. People can’t get enough of this magnificent church that looks perfect from every side.
4. Sé Cathedral
Built in the Portuguese-Manueline style, Se Cathedral features a Tuscan exterior and a Corinthian interior.
5. Church of St Cajetan
Modelled after St Peter's Basilica in Rome, this church was built in the second half of the 17th century, featuring Corinthian architecture.
6. Church of Our Lady of Rosary
The Church of Our Lady of Rosary was erected in fulfilment of a vow taken by Afonso de Albuquerque.
7. Chapel of St Catherine
It was built in 1510 by Afonso de Albuquerque to mark his entry into Goa on St Catherine’s feast day.
