Encounter the dark magic of Goa tourism

What sets the race apart from other sports events is that it is held at the best time of the year when tourism in the State is at its peak. The strategic timing of the event thus offers a blend of tourism and sports to the participants, offering them a memorable experience.

While there are different reasons the race draws many to Goa, its scenic route is one of the biggest attractions.

Most scenic run: Bhasker Desai

Age is not a barrier for septuagenarian marathoner, Bhasker Desai (72), of Mumbai, who has not missed a single edition of the GRM. “It is easily the most scenic race route in India. Green landscape, blue waters of the Zuari river, small hillocks, music bands and locals cheering you are features which are not experienced at any other race in India,” he avows.

“I love to spend time on the Benaulim beach, where I can swim, eat, drink and cut off from city life,” adds Desai, who had a personal best time of 1:40 hours at the half marathon in 2013.

AGE IS NO BARRIER: At 72, Bhasker Desai toasts to his good health by running the half marathon in Goa.

Well-planned route: Neera Katwal

Neera Katwal (48), marathoner and running coach from Bengaluru, has similar views. “The route is well-planned with plenty of aid stations at regular intervals. Traffic is controlled along the entire course. The food and post-race arrangements are great. We always have fun after the race, dancing to the live band,” Katwal praises.

Neera, who has a personal best time of 1:35 hrs for a half marathon said, “I love the beaches in Goa. The race venue is close to Bogmalo beach where we always stay and enjoy swimming in the sea after the run,” she adds.

Can't forget sound of the waves: Preeti Maneesh

Preeti Maneesh (39), also from Bengaluru, is looking forward to her second SKF-GRM race. “Last year, I ran the 32-km race and I still cannot forget the sound of the waves crashing against the river shores, as we ran past in perfect silence.”

According to Preeti, who has run a half marathon in 2:35 hrs, the early morning vibes in Goa are truly special. “I hope people start falling in love with the magic of Goa’s early mornings,” she says.
