Olympics: India beat Australia 1-0, storm into women's hockey semi finals

India defeated world No. 2 Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals for their maiden entry into the medal rounds of the Olympic Games hockey tournament.

The Indian women's hockey team made history on Monday as it stormed into the semi-finals of the Olympic Games hockey tournament for the first time. Sports Minister Anurag Thakur congratulated the team for making history and reaching the semi-finals of the Olympics for the first time.

India defeated world No. 2 Australia 1-0 in the quarterfinals for their maiden entry into the medal rounds of the Olympic Games hockey tournament.

In his tweet, the sports minister wrote, “"Splendid performance. Women's hockey team is scripting history with every move at #Tokyo2020. We are into the semifinals of the Olympics for the 1st time beating Australia. 130 crore Indians to the women's hockey team -- we're right behind you.”

Union Law Minister Kiren Rijiju also congratulated the team for a splendid display from the Women in Blue. Taking it to Twitter, he wrote, "India's dream is coming to reality! Our Women's Hockey Team has defeated Australia! India's Men's and Women's teams have reached semi-finals at #Tokyo2020 Olympics! I have no words to express my excitement and happiness."

This is India's biggest win in women's hockey as the team is playing in the Olympics only for the third time and had struggled to the knockout rounds, finishing fourth in Pool A.
