The hockey stadium at Peddem Sports complex in Mapusa will be named after hockey legend, Major Dhyan Chand, said Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Sunday. He was speaking on the birth anniversary of Major Dhyan Chand which is celebrated as National Sports Day in India.
The AstroTurf Hockey Stadium is being constructed by the Goa Sports Authority at Peddem sports complex for the 36th National Games to be held in Goa. The total budget of the project is Rs 5.50 crore.
Stadium's astroturf hockey field is ready and the construction of the dressing room, pavilion and other facilities is pending. After that, it will be formally inaugurated, as the Major Dhyanchand Stadium.
The AstroTurf Hockey Ground at the Peddem Sports Complex was awarded a certificate of recognition by the International Hockey Federation last year, noting that it was meeting global ground requirements.
The hockey ground was inspected by a delegation of the World Hockey Federation in early September last year. This certificate will be valid till September 2023.
Under the Khelo India Mission of the Union Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the development of two Khelo India Kendras in Goa has been approved. Under this scheme, infrastructure for hockey will be developed in Peddem-Mapusa whereas infrastructure for football will be developed in Fatorda.
