MARGAO: Claiming that the garbage menace at Sonsodo dump yard is beyond the limit, Margao Municipal Council (MMC) has urged the government to intervene and have a talk with Fomento company at the earliest. On Friday, the council held a special meeting to discuss a road map to tackle the burning garbage issue. The meeting was chaired by chairperson Pooja Naik. At the meeting, it was revealed that there are nearly 10 tons of garbage lying on the plant and no treatment has been done on the waste. The council feared that if this situation continues then there will be no place left to dump fresh waste generated in the city. It was informed by chairperson that on the order of the court, the council is paying Rs 1 lakh per day to Fomento and to date nearly Rs 7.60 crore have been paid to the company. She further said that the council had also paid one crore to Fomento with regard to developing landfill site but till date they failed to develop the same. The council now demanded to refund back the amount. It may be recalled that recently Director of Municipal Administration Dr Tariq Thomas urged the civic body to incentivize bulk waste generators, including housing societies having more than 40 dwelling units. Hence, this above meeting was called to discuss the garbage related issues.
