PANAJI: The State Election Commission (SEC) is mulling the idea of holding next municipal elections through e-polling even as it had to postponed the Zilla Panchayat (ZP) elections due to coronavirus scare, according to official source. The elections of 11 municipal councils are scheduled in October this year. The municipal councils which will go to hold in October 2020 are Mormugao, Margao, Mapusa, Curchorem-Cacora, Bicholim, Cuncolim, Quepem, Sanguem, Canacona, Pernem and Valpoi. There are a total of 159 wards with Mormugao and Margao municipal councils comprising of 25 wards each. For e-voting, the voter has to register himself/herself first with the SEC and on the polling day, they will be asked to vote online from anywhere on specially created SEC online voting website. However, the proposal is still in a nascent stage, the officials added. According to the official, if municipal polls are held online then Goa will be the second State after Gujarat in the country to introduce online polling. The Gujarat SEC conducted municipal corporation elections online in 2015. Meanwhile, the SEC is likely to take a decision to holding the ZP elections in the State after easing of lockdown 3.0. The ZP elections were first slated for March 22 was postponed to March 24 due to `Janata curfew' and was subsequently postponed. The officials said that the fresh date to hold ZP elections will be taken in consultation with the State government. "We are full prepared to hold ZP polls as ballot papers are also printed. We will now require only four days to make preparations including one or two days for training the polling staff," the official said.
