A hundred percent electrified Konkan Railway line (approx 740 km) from Roha, in Maharashtra, to Thokur, in Karnataka, has been dedicated to the nation. On June 20, 2022, Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, flagged off electric trains from Udupi, Margao, and Ratnagiri at a program held at Bengaluru. According to reports, the electrification of the Konkan Railway line has been done at a cost of more than Rs 1,280 crore.
The electric route is expected to save approx Rs 150 crore of expenditure on fuel, and ensure seamless operations.
On the occasion, the Prime Minister said, “Indian Railways is getting faster and cleaner, modern and safe, and also citizen-friendly. We have taken the train to those parts of the country, where it was difficult to even imagine. Indian Railways is now trying to provide the facilities and atmosphere, which was once found only at airports and air travel.”
Modi is on a two-day visit to Karnataka, during which he inaugurated various development projects in Karnataka, and will travel to Mysore, and visit Suttur Mutt in Chamundeshwari, to attend the International Yoga Day event.
