Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) has rolled up its sleeves to combat haphazard parking in the municipal area.
On Thursday, MMC councillor and chairperson along with the municipal staff impounded several abandoned vehicles parked in Vasco. MMC has decided to mark the parking areas for all vehicles in the port town henceforth.
The MMC has undertaken this drive as the abandoned vehicles have been occupying parking spaces.
Speaking to reporters during this drive, MMC chairperson Leo Rodrigues said the municipality has decided to streamline the parking system once and for all.
He said that soon the parking spaces for all types of vehicles will be marked. Also, those vehicles parked inappropriately will be fined heavily, he added.
The drive against abandoned vehicles will be carried out in all 25 wards of MMC in the coming days. These vehicles will be kept in the municipal yard.
Councillor Vinod Kinlekar (Pandey) told reporters that several abandoned vehicles have been identified by MMC. These were proving to be a deterrent for other vehicles to get parking space in the city. Now, by clearing these vehicles, enough space will be available, he added.
It may be recalled that Vasco town has been plagued by parking issue for a long time. In the past, efforts were made to put a parking system in place, but in vain.
The Vasco MLA Krishna (Daji) Salkar had written to the Vasco Traffic cell to streamline the parking by impounding abandoned vehicles.
Taking cognisance of the issue, the traffic police had warned locals to park in an orderly manner. On Thursday, Vasco traffic cell was also a part of this drive.
