PANAJI: Goa government has increased the minimum support price for cashew nuts by Rs 20 by considering Rs 105 per kg as the base price, informed Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Wednesday. Sawant said that farmers will get Rs 20 as minimum support price while Rs 105 per kg would be the base price for cashew. Further modalities regarding the same will be announced by the government soon, he added. The Chief Minister is learnt to have discussed the issue with Deputy Chief Minister Babu Kavlekar, Goa Bagayatdar chairman Narendra Sawaikar and Adarsh Krishi Cooperative Society chairman Prakash Velip before announcing the enhanced rates. Sanguem MLA Prasad Gaonkar had urged the government to enhance the minimum support price for cashew to Rs 200 per kg while, MGP MLA Sudin Dhavlikar had demanded that the government should fix the support price at Rs 150 per kg for cashew. Dhavlikar in fact had arrived at the minimum support price based on the rates of last four years. He had also demanded that the government should give minimum support price for coconut ie Rs 18 per nut and Rs 500 per kg for black pepper. Dhavlikar had also urged the government to ensure that the support price is given to deserving farmers and not to those having their names entered in Form I and XIV.
