PANAJI: Prasidh Naik, BDO of Mormugoa taluka along with representatives of 10 village panchayats of Mormugao block visited BITS Pilani, K K Birla Goa Campus to understand the functioning of the biogas plant installed at BITS campus.

The BDO is exploring the possibilities of seeking guidance by BITS faculty members in installing biogas plants at each village panchayat to treat its wet waste. Secretaries of all village panchayats and Sancoale sarpanch Girish Pillai, Cortalim sarpanch Senia Pereira, Majorda sarpanch Samson Gonsalves along with their panch members were part of the delegation led by BDO Naik.

The delegation met prof Srikanth Mutnuri, head, department of biological sciences and A K Patil, estate manager of BITS Pilani K K Birla Goa Campus.

During the visit, prof Srikanth took the delegation to the site of the biogas plant and explained the functioning of the BITS biogas plant and made a detailed presentation on its operation.

He emphasized that key point of the functioning of any biogas plant is segregated waste. He advised all panchayats to initiate awareness on waste segregation at source across the villages.

The biogas plant at BITS campus is functioning since November 2010 as the campus segregated waste collection system is in place. All village panchayats expressed interest in setting up the same for their villages with support of BITS Pilani, Goa Campus.
