Dreams can be daunting. In this world full of possibilities, sometimes just the act of beginning can seem impossible. But, for those who show courage and take that first step, and then another, know that with each attempt, dreams do become a reality.

Having discovered her passion for upcycling denim into functional pieces, Goa-based Shailaja Gangwar started her entrepreneurial journey, a dream that started small.

“I’ve always been a creative person. During the lockdown, I began to reuse denim pants (that were in good condition) to make bags, pouches, wall-hangings, all to satisfy my creative urges. And, with each stitch, I started getting better,” shares Shailaja, who is also a pharmacist.

As word spread among her friends and family, the requests for custom-made bags poured in. “Initially, I made bags for a couple of friends with their own denims free of cost. Later, I charged a minimal amount for the first few orders,” she says, recollecting how 'Creating Corner' took off.

Creating Corner, Shailaja’s brainchild, is a small business that’s into handmade, customisable bags, specifically crafted from denim.

“My home is my design studio, where right from designing to stitching to final dispatching, I’m in charge,” she smiles.

She prioritises quality over quantity, focusing on mindful production. “Oh, I really love the time I take to design a bag, trust me! The feeling of creating something from scratch is beautiful, it's like beginning an artwork, and then packing it and handing it over to the owner,” she says excitedly. “Production isn't as fast as factories, and that’s been a conscious process.”

“I feel humbled at the compliments I receive for all my efforts and the love I put into these bags,” she says. And, it's not just for the size and larger space that these bags offer, many are even impressed by the design and the fact that these are actually handmade by her.

Besides the highs, an entrepreneurial journey also brings along some lows. As a start-up, Shailaja reflects on the hurdles that came her way. “Challenges began when I started this as a business. I had no idea about pricing, marketing and deliveries. But, with time, I’ve picked on these skills and I’m still learning and trying to refine them.”

The prices of the bags range from Rs 300 to Rs 3,500, reflecting the love and attention invested in each piece. This Goa-based brand receives orders from across India, usually through her Instagram business page, where those interested can easily reach out and breathe new life into their old denim fabrics.

With each step making her vision clearer, Shailaja aims to expand her team while maintaining her conscious business approach.

For dreamers and newcomers, she advises them to be open to growth and adapt with time. “Also, just start! If there is any idea in your head, people might find it silly or too bold, and that’s okay. Don't let criticism hold you back,” she concludes.
