The film is loosely based on the 1955 novel, The Talented Mr. Ripley, by Patricia Highsmith, and is largely in French, with brief sequences in Italian and English.

Purple Noon is the story of a criminal and talented mimic, Tom Ripley, who takes on the identity of a rich, spoilt brat after murdering him. He, then, utilises all his crafty skills to dodge the police and the victim's friends.
