Even as the revellery of the past week continues to linger, the Island of Divar is set to shift into high gear for the joyous celebration of Bonderam once again. This time, it's being organised by the Piedade Youth Association (PYA) of Divar and the excitement is palpable.

In a vibrant spectacle of local talent, creativity and cherished traditions, the festival will unfold this weekend on August 24. The celebrations will kick off in the afternoon at 3 pm with the annual flag march, fancy dress competition and float parade, accompanied by non-stop fun, lively tunes and a ton of festivities.

Speaking about marking a major milestone, Savio Monteiro, the PYA president noted, “This year is significant as the Piedade Youth Association celebrates 40 years of hosting Bonderam, the traditional flag festival of Divar Island.”

Every year, the festival brings in something new and exciting, drawing huge crowds to the venue.

“Especially the wards, they present unique themes in the float parade, showcasing their creativity and unified spirit. And, for the first time, PYA will also feature its own float,” he added.

Here’s what unfolded at Goa's Malar Bonderam 2024

Having performed at the festival for more than 20 years, Kimberly D'Mello a youth from the 'Romantic Ward', appreciates the festival for all that it is.

Bonderam is something that has been carried out on our beautiful island for many years, it represents our traditions and culture. It’s a wonderful experience, where all the islanders come together to celebrate this festival with unity,” she proudly stated.

Earlier, when Bonderam was organised by the comunidades, it used to be held differently.

“There used to be only a fancy dress parade, where everyone used to dress up uniquely and head for the flag march. It used to start from our ward (Vittozem), it was just a flag parade and fotash,” recalled Caitano Furtado, who has been participating in the festival for over 50 years.

With PYA taking over, small floats were introduced which improved and turned more elaborate over time. Preparations for these begin months in advance -- from deciding the theme to choreographing the dance routine to getting down every minute detail, from props to costumes.

“Our waddo meets near the chapel and does the work together, everything is done by us. So far, all the preparations have been going well. From small children to seniors, everyone is showing great enthusiasm,” shared Caitano who added that every ward is putting their best efforts to make Bonderam a grand success.
