Get ready for an evening of symphony from the classical era as the Kala Academy Symphony Orchestra is all set to perform Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 70 on August 22, 2023 at the Institute Menezes Braganza Hall, Panjim, as part of their Founder's Day event.
Conducted by Maestro Fr Romeo Monteiro, the concert will showcase the intricate melodies, energetic rhythms and dramatic contrasts of Joseph Haydn's Symphony No. 70.
ABOUT JOSEPH HAYDN
Joseph Haydn is said to be the 'Father of the Symphony' and has written more than 100 such works for orchestra. His Symphony No. 70 has 4 movements and is an intricate work of classical music.
ON THE DAY OF THE EVENT
On Founder's Day of the Department of Western Music, meritorious students of the previous academic year, prize-winning students, studying in various disciplines, such as strings (violin, viola, violoncello), pianoforte, classical guitar and voice, will present their musical items.
The Junior and Senior Choirs of Kala Academy Goa will also be in attendance.
WHAT FOUNDERS DAY IS ALL ABOUT
The Founder's Day of the Department of Western Music is celebrated every year and is held in remembrance of Antonio Fortunato Figueiredo, who was the pioneer of the institution.
Hailing from the village of Loutolim, Figueiredo breathed his last in the year 1981. So, the Founder's Day event is celebrated in remembrance of the great musician.
Currently, the Department of Western Music of Kala Academy is headed by Maestro Rev Romeo Monteiro, who is a diocesan priest. He is a former student of Kala Academy Goa, and studied under the then Director, the late Maestro Lourdino Barreto.
Fr Monteiro has degrees from the Pontifical Institute of Sacred Music and the Pontifical Athaeneum of St Anselm. He has specialised in Composition and Church Music.
ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT OF WESTERN MUSIC
Kala Academy's Department of Western Music caters to the formation of musicians in the European system of music. It is known to be one of the first schools that taught Western classical music in a systematic and scientific method in India.
The Department is the continuation of what began in 1952 as Academia de Música da Índia Portuguesa, modelled on the musical education given at the Conservatories in Europe.
The members of the KA Symphony Orchestra are:

Violin II: Adriano, Niah, Lisa, Vivek, Sarah, Marina, Savio, Melvin and Velerio.
Viola: Brandon, Pearl, Leanne, Katia, Nyana, Nicole, Samantha and Rhea.
Violoncello: Reanne, Daanish, Joann, Traci, Rhys, Tabitha, Larissa and Alayna.
Contrabass: Noel, Edgar and Vozlar.
Reed section: Preethi, Roy, Ian and Antonio.
Brass section: Kristine, Karoline, Sofie and Deborah.
Timpani: Ranisa.
