In order to commemorate the 120th birth anniversary of renowned artist and pioneer of Indian Christian Art, Angelo da Fonseca (1902-1967), an art exhibition titled, ‘Angelo da Fonseca’s Indian Madonna’ was inaugurated at the Xavier Centre of Historical Research (XCHR), Porvorim, last month.
The exhibition includes 75 works by Fonseca, focusing on the Madonna.
Goan artist and writer, Savia Viegas, who has curated this exhibition stated that in this exhibition, Fonseca’s works are divided into three phases—1931 to 1948, 1950-57—the era especially in 1954 when he did major Madonna works, and 1958-1967, which according to Savia is his most mature work.
Savia says that Fonseca had a deep passion for the ‘mother’ and in his works, he has shown all aspects of the virgin mother.
The exhibition also showcases the works of 30 students from schools across Panjim, Porvorim, Mapusa and Saligao, their interpretation of ‘mother’ based on Fonseca’s works which is about mother and Madonna.
The exhibition will remain open for public viewing till March 31, 2023 at XCHR, Porvorim from 10 am to 5 pm.
