Shridharani Gallery, New Delhi, presents a solo exhibition titled ‘Ek Jeev Sadashiv’ (Single Man is always a Lion) by Goan artist, Damodar Madgaonkar.
Artists are inspired by several diverse topics, and Damodar’s inspiration is derived from mythological sources, attaining a new quality and subtle unity, as he pictorially depicts the age old Konkani proverbs of socio-culture handed down verbally from one generation to another.
“The combination of wild characters, with the humongous power of an elephant to bring about a change, fascinates me,” says the young self-taught artist. Elephants in varying poses, with a repetitive oval motif in black on the head, catch the viewer’s eye. A lion standing guard, surrealistic depictions interspersed with human faces, incorporate closely knitted terminology and passionate effervescence.
The concept of mandalas in some depictions attempt to connect with omnipresent visuals, which are woven into his art to instate values to the younger generation.
Minute detailing, spaces, bold lines, text in the background, reflect many-layered passionate narrations, in shades of browns, grey and chrome yellow, cadmium, while vibrant blues unite with touches of red. The display centers around intellectual participation, with the panoramic spread of pictorial structuring in a large format of the 30 works in 5.5ft x7.5 ft, (7 on canvas and others on paper) and mediums using charcoal, acrylic, pencil, oil and mix-media, which give personal distinctive expressions in a versatile language.
Along with managing his family business in hospitality, Damodar pursues his passion in art, and, except for one painting exhibited in a group show by senior and younger artists at Artinspired Studio, Vagator, that he curated earlier this year, it is commendable that Damodar has a solo show in the vibrant art scenario of New Delhi.
The solo exhibition, ‘Ek Jeev Sadashiv’ by Goan artist, Damodar Madgaonkar will be on display at Shridharani Gallery, Tiveni Kala Sangaam, New Delhi, from September 10, 2022 till September 18, 2022
