Come summer, and doesn’t everybody just want to head to Goa’s shores? The sun-kissed beaches and salty waters appear very inviting as the scorching sun sends out waves of heat in the months of April and May.
But, just step out of the house, and it’s the skin that has to brave the heat and the other myriad challenges that follow.
“One of the primary concerns during summer is the excessive sweating and increased oiliness on the skin's surface, often clogging pores and paving the way for acne breakouts,” says Consultant Dermatologist, Manipal Hospital Goa, Dr Chinchitha T Davis.
"This makes it imperative to adopt measures to control oil production and keep the skin clean,” she says.
Fungal infections like ringworm etc and bacterial infections like sweat gland abscesses, folliculitis etc are very common during summer, Dr Chinchitha explains.
She adds that there is increased risk of skin rashes and infections during the hot days. “Fungal infections like ringworm etc and bacterial infections like sweat gland abscess, folliculitis etc are very common during summer,” Dr Chinchitha explains.
Dr Preeti Savardekar, a visiting dermatologist at VM Salgaocar Hospital, Chicalim, says that some of the most common cases she deals with are hair fall, dandruff, folliculitis on the scalp and body, athlete’s foot, tanning skin, pigmentation, sun allergies and acne flare ups.
“Goan summers call for bike rides, basking in the sun on the beach, playing outdoor sports and many more activities, but in Goa, the sun also leaves a deeper tan,” she adds.
SHOW YOUR SKIN YOU CARE
Sometimes, maintaining healthy skin doesn’t have to break the bank. An inexpensive way to keep skin healthy is primarily by preventing skin diseases through regular, season-appropriate skincare habits.
Dr Chinchitha suggests investing in a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30+ (preferably SPF 50) and PA 3+ to shield the skin from harmful UV rays.

“Remember to reapply every 2 to 4 hours, especially if spending extended periods outdoors. And, complement sunscreen with physical measures like wearing a hat or carrying an umbrella for added protection,” she says.
Apart from sun protection, Dr Preeti recommends wearing simple cotton/linen or light clothing in darker colours to prevent UV rays from reaching your skin.
“Wash your hair with a gentle shampoo, and avoid ironing it too much. And, remember nutrition, eating right and staying hydrated does a world of good for your skin,” says Dr Preeti, adding that one should avoid oily and fried foods, and eat delicious Goan mancurad mangoes and non-veg food in moderation.
Tips recommended by dermatologists from Goa
Appropriate cleansing: Use a salicylic acid-based face wash for oily, acne-prone skin to control oil production and prevent breakouts.
Opt for a gentle, oil-controlling foaming face wash for oily, sensitive skin and choose a mild cleanser for dry or normal skin with, or without, skin sensitivity.
Moisturising: Hydrate the skin with a non-occlusive, non-comedogenic light moisturiser, preferably a lotion, to maintain skin hydration without clogging pores or exacerbating oiliness.
Avoid heavy makeup during summer, as it can further clog pores and worsen acne.
Go minimal on makeup: Avoid heavy makeup during summer, as it can further clog pores and worsen acne. Opt for lightweight, non-comedogenic formulations and ensure thorough removal before bedtime.
Home skincare remedies: Home skincare remedies are not a complete no-no. However, it's essential to choose wisely according to your skin type and specific concerns.
For oily skin, besan (gram flour) or Multani mitti (Fuller's earth), combined with raw milk or rose water, can help absorb excess oil, unclog pores and improve a tan.
If your skin is dry, consider honey, oatmeal, tomato, aloe vera and yogurt/malai (cream) to provide nourishment and hydration to dry skin, and restore its moisture balance.
Avoid applying turmeric, sandalwood, lemon juice, neem leaves, etc, on any type of skin, as they can increase photosensitivity and cause skin irritation.
Also, refrain from applying oil on acne-prone skin, as it can clog pores and exacerbate acne.
So, this summer, as you soak up the sun on Goa’s beaches, don’t neglect your skin, consider a proactive approach, tailored to address specific challenges, incorporate easy, cost-effective and travel-friendly skin care measures and enjoy a radiant complexion all season long.
