Love takes many forms, and not all heroes wear capes. For stray dogs, heroes are those who carry food in their cars to make stops and feed them, and those who rescue and foster them to health and safety until they find their forever homes.
Animals may not be able to speak, but their actions always speak louder than words. They may not say “thank you,” but their eyes and loyalty shine through every time they rest their head on your lap.
As the world celebrates International Dog Day on August 26, let’s understand why Goa is passionate about the message: 'Adopt, don’t shop'.
“Adopting a pet is not just a noble act; it's an act of compassion that can change a life forever,” explains Ujwala Pande, a dedicated stray dog feeder and rescuer in Goa.
It is no secret that animal shelters are overflowing with pets who have been abandoned or lost, each hoping to go home with every passerby.
She shares that choosing to adopt means giving a homeless animal a second chance at happiness, a chance to experience the warmth of a loving home, perhaps for the first time ever.
“By adopting, you’re not only saving a life but also breaking the cycle of overpopulation and neglect. While buying a pet might bring joy, it often supports harmful breeding practices and leaves countless animals in shelters still hoping for a family,” she emphasises.
In harmony with Ujwala’s message, Neha Sawkar Vaze, another passionate stray dog nurturer shares a poem:
“An act of kindness to a soul in need,
Saving a life, with a few morsels to feed.
Picking it up from where left abandoned,
Or freeing up a space in the shelter,
Where another in need has landed!
Loads of cuddles, kisses, and a daily spin,
In the bargain, a best friend guaranteed!
Isn't this situation a win-win?
Saving time and money too,
Let’s beat the drum!
A loyal companion with loads of tail wags and snuggles for years to come.
A loyal companion with loads of tail wags and snuggles for years to come.”
