When it comes to planning an event, a lot of thought is put into all aspects, from the décor to the food, and let’s not forget the all-important cake.
Can a celebration be complete without that very special cake?
Having one makes any event more pleasurable and memorable. And, irrespective of a person’s age, everyone wants a delicious cake, and so choosing the right one to really bring out the essence of the occasion is essential.
Today, with customised cakes being the new trend and in huge demand, the cake has turned into the star of the occasion. To meet the increasing demand, there are many bakers out there baking and icing cakes as per the customer’s choice and desires.
Asma Sheikh, who operates under the banner of Aifa’s Delights, says, “Customised cakes, in the past, were only for the elite. However, now it’s a trend, and everyone has one, irrespective of the affordability.”
Asma has been in the business since 2018, and had started doing these cakes as a side hustle, eventually progressing from there to now being a well-known wedding cake artiste.
Her buttercream wedding cake creations are noted in local pastry circles. Other than that, she bakes all kinds of cakes, including themed cakes for kids.
Her modus operandi is simple -- you select the design, give it to her, and she delivers at the appointed time.
Her baking preferences involve the use of more buttercream and less fondant, since the buttercream is less sweet, yet delicious.
When it comes to customisation, most of her ingredients are made in-house, rather than being store-bought. Right from the fruit compotes to the caramel and even gum paste and fondant, all are prepared by her and this is what makes her cakes unique.
Melissa Martins, from Vasco, who also specialises in customised cakes, says, “People prefer customised cakes since they want unique and outstanding cakes, which are also trendy.”
Melissa has been in the baking business for around 30 years. She left law school to pursue her passion for baking, and operates under the banner of Renees Goodies, where she not only customises cakes, but conducts classes on the same.
She prefers working the good, old traditional way and loves baking as well as decorating.
