MARGAO: An undertrial who was taken to Hospicio Hospital, Margao for treatment fled from police custody on Wednesday night. The Cuncolim police gave the name of the undertrial as Gabbi Fernandes, 23, a resident of Ambeudak, Sanvordem. He was arrested on the charge of stealing a two-wheeler.
PSI Aditya Naik who was investigating the theft case arrested Gabbi on the charge of stealing a two-wheeler while it was parked in an open place at Chinchinim on April 25, 2018. Gabbi was also arrested by the Karwar police in connection with a theft case and he was involved in some petty offenses.
On Wednesday, he complained of uneasiness and was taken to the primary health center at Balli from where he was shifted to the Hospicio Hospital, Margao. Two constables Raju Talpekar and Sarvesh Naik were posted on duty but in the night when one of the constables went in the washroom and taking advantage of this, the accused assaulted the other constable and escaped from the hospital. Immediately the constables contacted Fatorda police station, who launched a search operation to arrest the accused.
Superintendent of Police (SP) South, Arvind Gawas on Thursday said that both the constables posted at the Cuncolim police station and who were on duty guarding the accused have been placed under suspension. The Fatorda police have registered the case against Gabbi Fernandes under sections 353 and 224 of the Indian Penal Code and are conducting investigations.
