Rum and coke is a cult favourite, especially in Goa. Loved across almost every age group, it is a magic portion in a glass that keeps everybody warm in the monsoons, especially at a picnic on Goa’s Western Ghats.
Dad pours the rum in a glass, Mum adds the cola, and a few sips later, the rum disappears into the same thin air that now, seems bearable.
World Rum Day may have ended yesterday, but the bottle of rum lives on even the day after. On that note, let us say a momentary goodbye to the good ol’ common bottles of rum, and pick up a bottle of Satiwa, a Hemp Craft Rum brand based in Goa.
Founded by Goan entrepreneur Sahil Adwalpalkar, Satiwa Rum is India’s first Hemp Craft Rum.
With the aim of bringing a hemp-based rum into the Indian market, creating awareness about the multiple benefits of hemp, and reducing the stigma around it, Satiwa rum has combined age-old craftsmanship with a modern twist to create a spirit that is as bold as it is innovative.
Sticking to basics, have a shot of Satiwa paired with a few cubes of ice and cola, sit in the comfort of your balcony and watch the rain trickle down as it drowns out your sorrows and monsoon blues.
As for Sahil, “I usually like my rum with just some soda, loads of ice, a hint of coke and a slice of lime,” he says as he pours himself a glass of Satiwa rum just the way he likes it.
Taste wise, the tasting notes of Satiwa Rum are sweetish with subtle fruity (apricot, plum, peach) and vanilla hints, while the background notes are tobacco, walnut and black tea.
It’s soft, multi-layered, filled with tones of dried fruits, vanilla and oak nuances on the palate and the finish is a pleasant, medium length, slightly astringent, with woody and fruity undertones.
“However, the best way to enjoy Satiwa rum in this monsoon weather would be neat,” Sahil smiles.
A tagline speaks volumes. And as for Satiwa’s tagline, it says that it is ‘Crafted for Adventure’. And Goa, its lush greenery, the pitter-patter of the rains and a glass of Satiwa rum make for the perfect rainy-day adventure.
