The lantern festival, known as Glow Fest, which was to be held at Morjim beach, North Goa, on May 25, 2024, stands cancelled. Here's why:
Glow Fest faced serious opposition from environmental groups and locals, who raised fire risks, especially in windy conditions. They said accidental fires could damage forests, fields, and even endanger property or wildlife.
The festival's cancellation stemmed from several concerns, including lack of permits, its proximity to a turtle nesting site, and its location within an eco-sensitive zone.
Concerned individuals took to social media, sending emails and letters, urging local authorities to cancel the event due to potential threats to marine life at Goa's Morjim beach.
Heeding public concerns, authorities stepped in to cancel the festival and vowed to remain vigilant for similar events. This also prompted the festival venue to withdrawal itself as venue partner.
However, organisers have stated that all purchased tickets (originally priced at Rs 550) will be refunded due to the festival's postponement caused by unexpected rains.
