WATER STORIES

A display of interdisciplinary research, ‘Expressing Ecology II’, is being held at Sunaparanta Goa Centre for the Arts, Panjim. The event, which has been organised along with Goa University, Goa Institute of Management (GIM) and the Living Waters Museum, is a part of the Goa Water Stories, and is open till July 12, 2024.

WHEN RESEARCH MEETS ART

Five researchers worked with five artists from the Sunaparanta Art Initiator Lab (SAIL) – Asavari Gurav, Shivranjana Rathore, Siddesh Gaunekar, Satyam Malhar and Jodan De Souza – to bring together and co-create stories on Goa’s water, environment and conservation.

BEHIND THE THEMES

The five researchers, who worked with the artists from the SAIL, are Amisha Shetgaonkar, Ayesha Karmali, Bhushan Thakur, Nisha Chari and Sandhya Gaonkar.

SALT OF THE EARTH

The show revolves around Goa’s ecology, right from mangroves to beaches to fields and forests of Mhadei. The above display focuses on those who work in salt pans.

GREEN THOUGHTS

One of the artworks depicts Goa's complex ecology, such as mangrove forests.

WITHER SOIL

The issue of soil erosion at Sal and Ibrampur village, resulting from the construction of a bandara, is the subject of one of the displays.

BEACH BELT

The impact of tourism in places such as Morjim, where the beach has turtle nesting sites, is another issue in focus.

VILLAGE VOICES

Another problem that is highlighted is the conflict between the villagers of Sattari and the Forest Department, since the former are denied access to forests to collect firewood, visit their sacred groves, etc.
