MAKING GOA PROUD

Goan shuttler Tanisha Crasto and her partner Ashwini Ponnappa will participate in the women's doubles at the Paris Olympics. Here are a few more Goans who participated in the Olympics over the years.

FIRST GOAN AT THE OLYMPICS

Peter Paul Fernandes was the first Goan to represent India at the Berlin Olympics in 1936, and won a gold medal for the hockey team.

BEST OF THE BEST

In 1948, Leo Pinto, along with 4 Goans, represented India at the London Olympics. In those days, Leo was considered the ‘Best Goalkeeper in the World'.

LADY BOSS

Mary D'Souza Sequeira was the first Indian female Olympian to run in the 1952 Olympics in Helsinki, Finland.

GO FOR GOLD

In 1980, the Indian men's hockey team won gold at the Moscow Olympics, in which Goa's Merwyn Fernandes represented Goa.

THE BEAUTIFUL GAME

Goa's Fortunato Franco, from Colvale, represented India at the football event at the 1960 Olympics in Rome.

WOMEN POWER

Eliza Nelson, Selma D'Silva, Lorraine Fernandes and Margaret Toscano were part of the women's hockey team in the 1980 Moscow Olympics.
