Know these medicinal plants of Goa found in the monsoon

CENTELLA ASIATICA

This is a common medicinal herb found in Goa. It is called gunduri or karvino and is used to treat the common cold in children.

CURCULIGO ORCHIOIDES

It is commonly known as golden-eyed grass or kali musli. It grows on rocky plateaus in Goa during the rainy season. Curculigo is used as a rejuvenating tonic, aphrodisiac drug and diuretic.

ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS

It is commonly called Shatavari and locally known as sitechavar in Konkani. Is a climber which grows in the rainy season in Goa. It is one of the important medicinal herbs used in Ayurveda.

VIGNA RADIATA (Wild moong)

It is an annual herb that grows in Goa during the rainy season. It is rich in protein and has many health benefits. It is used for detoxification, refreshing mentality and alleviating heat stroke.

GLORIOSA SUPERBA

Also known as flame lily, this is a medicinal herb commonly growing in Goa during the rainy season. Because of its use in the treatment of gout, infertility, open wounds, snakebite and other ailments, it is commercially cultivated.

CURCUMA SP (wild turmeric)

This is a herb that is closely related to turmeric and is widely used in Ayurvedic medicines.

NAREGAMIA ALATA (Goanese Ipecac)

This is a medicinal herb that grows on rocky plateaus in the rainy season. It is commonly called pitta mari, which is commonly used for the treatment of various diseases. The plant is endemic to the Western Ghats.

RAUWOLFIA SERPENTINA (Indian snakeroot)

This is another common herb found in Goa in the rainy season. As per IUCN red data list, it is a threatened species and needs conservation. The plant is mostly used as a safe and effective treatment for hypertension.
