Goa's Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary honours the 'Birdman of India'

Today marks the birth anniversary of one of India's most prominent ornithologists Dr Salim Ali, who was often regarded as the "Birdman of India".

NAMESAKE SANCTUARY

Goa's Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary derives its name from Dr Salim Ali, one of the great contributors to the popularisation of ornithology, the study of birds, in India.

GREAT CONTRIBUTION

Dr Salim Ali worked all his life to study bird behaviours, their importance to nature and their conservation. Hence, many bird sanctuaries are named after him.

BIRD HAVEN

Dr Salim Ali Bird Sanctuary, an estuarine mangrove habitat, is located on Chorao island, housing a variety of birds.

BIODIVERSITY HOTSPOT

This biodiversity hotspot hosts and protects a number of bird species as well as insects and crustacean species, which can be spotted here.

NATURE CONSERVATION

This sanctuary works toward fulfilling the purpose of the perseveration and conservation of a natural habitat to welcome an array of migratory birds and other fauna.
