NAME GAME

The name 'Panjim' was coined during the Portuguese era. And although the city is officially known as 'Panaji' today, many Goans still find that calling it 'Panjim' rolls off the tongue much easier.

QUIET HARMONY

In the past, Panjim was only a fishing village that lay in silence by the banks of the River Mandovi.

FOND FAVOURITE

Back in the early 16th century, Yusuf Adil Shah, the first Sultan of Bijapur, took a liking to Panjim and built his palace which he fortified with 55 cannons and a saltwater moat.

IN SIGHT

This palace was the first sight in the eyeline of the Portuguese when they set sail into Goan waters.

OLD GOLD

Once the Portuguese took over, almost all important activity took place in Old Goa, which was the first capital of Goa under Portuguese rule.

CAPITAL SWITCH

Until, in due time, the crown of the capital was given to Panjim in the year 1843...
