PANJIM'S FINEST

Architecture has always been intriguingly complex, and the beauty of architecture in Goa is certainly one for the history books. Take, for example, Goa's Panjim Church, also known as Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Imaculada Conceição.

BEAUTIFUL IN WHITE

Painted pearly white, the church features three bays and four storeys, and several other elements that make it a stunning example of colonial architecture.

PAST RECAP

While Panjim was made a parish in the 1600s, the original chapel was established even before 1541. It was later rebuilt in 1619, marking a significant moment in the church's architectural history.

IN HONOUR

The church showcases a Mannerist Neo-Roman style, prominently displaying the insignia 'AM,' which stands for 'Ave Maria,' at its apex.

STILL GOING STRONG

A striking feature that draws many visitors is the stone staircase of the church which was built in 1870. Remarkably, it still stands strong even today.

JUST LIKE PORTUGAL

Additionally, the staircase bears a striking resemblance to that of the Sanctuary of Bom Jesus in Braga, Portugal.

HISTORIC RING

Making sound waves, the large 2.25-ton bell in the belfry of the Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception Church once belonged to the Monastery of St Augustine in Old Goa.
