Where has my beautiful Goa beach gone?

Increased tourist footfalls have led to environmental and infrastructural pressures in the coastal areas that need to be addressed

‘Let’s head to the beach,’ is a phrase commonly heard not just from tourists visiting Goa but also from locals who succumb to its allure. Reflecting on my younger days, going to the beach was a highly-anticipated adventure. Every Sunday, my family and I eagerly looked forward to picnics on the State's golden sands. However, having lived in North Goa all my life, I've witnessed profound changes in the beachscape.

Once renowned for their serene beauty and laid-back charm, the beaches of North Goa have gradually transformed into bustling hubs of activity. The influx of tourists has undeniably brought economic benefits to the region, fostering businesses and creating jobs. Yet, alongside these gains, there are noticeable drawbacks.

PEACEFUL & SERENE: The serenity of Morjim beach which was once without the madding crowds.

About a decade ago, visiting Morjim beach was a relaxing experience. The sand was pristine, crowds were minimal and one could enjoy uninterrupted playtime. However, that’s no longer the case. A few months ago, I decided to swim at Morjim, which is conveniently close to my home. As I approached, I was met with the sight of rental cars and vehicles from other States lined up creating a chaotic scene. Manoeuvring through this congested parking situation was not just a test of parking skills but also a measure of patience.

NEW LOOK: Morjim's popularity has exploded in recent years, leading to a surge in demand for beach shacks.

The rise in tourism in Morjim has led to a significant increase in visitors and business establishments, bringing both opportunities and challenges. With more tourists, traffic congestion has become an issue, particularly along the narrow route leading to the beach, where hotels and cafes line one side.

This situation leaves limited space for vehicles seeking parking, creating a scramble for spots close to these establishments. Additionally, beachgoers vie for parking on the other side. It is crucial for the government to address this by providing adequate parking facilities to minimise congestion and ensure a welcoming experience for everyone.

The influx of tourists has placed significant pressure on local infrastructure, leading to challenges like beach cleanliness, waste management and overcrowding.

During my visit to this once-pristine shoreline, I was struck by the sheer number of people in colourful attire all vying for access to the sea. It seemed that the concept of appropriate swimwear and beach etiquette had been largely overlooked.

Wearing a swimsuit felt out of place amid the crowd. Visitors should understand the importance of proper swimwear at the beach. For those who have concerns about traditional swimsuits, there are full-sleeved options available that provide complete coverage and comfort. There’s a clear need for better awareness about appropriate beach attire.

Balancing the economic advantages while preserving the natural beauty and tranquillity of these beaches has become a crucial concern for both locals and authorities alike.

The increased footfalls have led to environmental pressures, with litter and infrastructure strains becoming more prevalent. Balancing the economic advantages while preserving the natural beauty and tranquillity of these beaches has become a crucial concern for both locals and authorities alike.

In the past, Morjim had fewer shacks and restaurants, resulting in minimal plastic waste. However, today, plastic and glass bottles litter the beach and surrounding areas. This not only poses a risk to beachgoers but also endangers animals, such as cows and dogs, who can suffer serious injuries.

CATTLE CLASS: Cattle often wander on the beach in search of food.

While there are bins available, many people opt to leave their trash on the ground, in the hope that someone else will clean it up. In the meantime, this neglect can lead to accidents, including cuts or flat tyres. Stricter regulations on littering are essential to address this issue effectively.

The vibrant nightlife and party scene that North Goa is famous for can also be overwhelming for some visitors. Yet, despite the crowds, North Goa's beaches continue to be a popular tourist destination.

However, if you’re looking for a more peaceful Goan experience, you might want to consider exploring the beaches of South Goa or venturing further north to lesser-known beaches.
