Goa's International Master (IM) Chess player Ameya Awadi has won two international chess tournaments in the Balkans.
Ameya won the VI Meduarodini Rejting Sahovski Tunir Open 2021, Bozidar Kicovic - Kica Championship and the Third Saturday Mix 225 Open A–Novisad.
Ameya beat GM Drasic Sinisa of Serbia and GM Zakhartsov Vladimir of Russia, CM Stanojevic Llija, Krstic Andrija Marko of Serbia & Muratovic Efim from Bosnia in the Kica Championship. He finished with a rating of 2574.
In the Third Saturday Mix 225 Open A -Novisad, Ameya began as the 11th seed of the tournament. He beat the Former US Chess Champion GM Yermolinsky Alex, IM Maksimovic Branimir of Serbia, IM Nitin S, WFM Srishti Pandey and Akshit Kumar J of India, FM Burco Cagatay of Turkey and drew with GM Basso Pier Luigi of Italy and GM Zakhartsov Vladimir of Russia. He ended the tournament with six wins and two draws. He put up a rating performance of 2576.
This was Ameya's first international tournament since playing in the Aeroflot Open B in March 2020. Due to Covid-19 restrictions, he could not play in international competitions during the past year.
