As many as 20 school relay teams will compete in the 12th SKF Goa River Marathon on Sunday, December 11, at Chicalim. Each school with a team of four runners below the age of 15 will compete in the 5 km race.
The 20 schools include seven state government schools. This is the first time school teams are competing in the popular marathon.
Disclosing this information in a media release issued on Thursday, Rakesh Unny, the secretary of the Vasco Sports Club (organisers of the event) said, “We are excited to use our marathon as a platform to nurture young Goan athletic talent. Winners and promising talent identified in this event will be given a mentor, who will guide them to become future winners in long-distance events.”
The winners in the boys’ category will be presented with a rolling trophy named after the late Noel Da Lima Leitao, while the girls’ category winners will be presented with a rolling trophy named after the late Alino Souza Eremita, both Vasco Sports Club members.
Road closures for the 12th SKF Goa River Marathon
All races start and end at the Chicalim Panchayat, and hence the entire road from the Chicalim junction to the Cortalim junction will remain closed between 3 am to 10.30 am on Sunday, December 11.
The participants and spectators driving to the car/scooter parking area at Regina Mundi High School in Chicalim need to drive to Chicalim using the Verna-Dabolim airport road stated the media release.
