Vasco residents demand traffic lights on Varunapuri

Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Varunapuri-Sada highway on January 3, 2021.

After witnessing numerous road accidents in their area, the residents of Vasco have demanded a installation of traffic island and traffic lights in Varunapuri prior to the start of the Varunapuri-Sada highway.

Residents claimed that traffic signals and island have not been provided in the area.

Vasco MLA Carlos Almeida initiated to facilitate traffic islands and traffic signals in the four lane square at Varunapuri but no steps have been taken on the ground.

On January 3, Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari inaugurated the Varunapuri-Sada highway, also announcing a new Rs. 400 crore project, which was approved at the request of Transport Minister Mauvin Godinho to start a signal free tea junction at Bogmalo Road.

Gadkari had said that road between Varunapuri and Sada junction to be accident-free.

However, local fear a traffic congestion in the arear.

"Heavy vehicles passing through the city area are likely to be diverted from the highway once started. Therefore, traffic congestion is going to increase in this area," said a resident from Varunapuri.

A huge number of vehicles also take a diversion through Varunpuri Chowk through Dabolim Airport to reach Mangorhill and Baina.
