Sancoale panchayat led by sarpanch Girish Pillai on Friday stopped the work to lay a gas pipeline that was being carried by Indian Oil-Adani Gas Private Limited (IOAL).

Local panch members alleged that the contractor damaged an important culvert near Jasiya Bakery in Birla Zuarianagar on a busy road that connects the Zuari Agro factory and other residential areas of Zuarinagar slums besides Sancoale industrial estate.

Amid heated arguments, the contractor was directed to stop work. The culvert was built by PWD on a busy road frequented by hundreds of motorists and other commercial vehicles.

The project contractor however claimed that he would repair the road covert. However, locals said that contractor was unable to give a satisfactory reply on permissions obtained to lay the pipeline.

Sancoale Panchayat has now issued directions to the IOAL contractor to completely stop the gas pipeline work until the culvert is repaired or rebuilt.
