Rain unleashed its fury on Goa early Friday morning, with Sanguem and Canacona receiving maximum showers, submerging several low-lying areas and throwing normal life out of gear in the first half of the day.

While Thursday saw some respite from the rain, Friday faced cyclone-like winds that uprooted trees and blocked roads across the State, keeping fire department personnel on their toes.

Yet again, the Kushavati River in Quepem was flooded with the road and water at equal levels, while the Avede-Paroda bridge was submerged. Due to the huge flow of water, villages of Paroda and Avede on the banks of the river were disconnected.

At Deulmol, Quepem, too, the water level in the river increased and was flowing at great speed. The traffic on the road between Paroda and Sangeum had to be diverted due to flooding.
The duckbill spillway of Selaulim dam in Sanguem, which is designed to discharge excess water, started overflowing Friday morning. In 2021 and 2020, it started overflowing on July 9 and 13, respectively.

The Indian Meteorological Department, Goa, said all stations reported very heavy rainfall and the one at Sanguem recorded extremely heavy showers. It said the state average rainfall was the highest of this season as of Friday.

Meanwhile, the IMD has predicted heavy rainfall activity for Saturday.
