Central jail officials deny claims of a major raid at its premises

The Superintendent of the Central Jail has refuted the claims that a major raid was conducted at the Central Jail premises.

A major raid at the Colvale Central Jail was conducted on Wednesday 26th, January and seized phones, cash, drugs, tobacco products from the inmates' cells. However, the prison department has denied the claims and said that no mobile phones or substance was found inside the jail.

Sources said mobile phones, cash, chargers, drugs, and tobacco was found in inmates cells who were under trial. Some mobiles were also seized from the quarantine block of the Central Jail. A total of 74 mobile phones were seized from all the various cells.

However, the Superintendent of the Central Jail has refuted the claims that a major raid was conducted at the Central Jail premises.

The Jail Superintendent of Central Jail, Gauresh Kuttikar, confirmed that a routine exercise search was conducted in the block and no cash, Mobile phones or substance were found inside the jail.

"We conducted a search at the Central Colvale Jail but nothing was found as there is a general order to undertake the search once a week and submit the report, however, the search was conducted in only the two trial blocks and the quarantine block and not in another place," Kuttikar said.

Inspector General of Prison, Venancio Furtado, said, "It is speculation created by someone, we will trace the person who has spread the rumour, who in an attempt wants to tarnish the reputation on the jail and the working staff. I have also sought a report from the Jail Superintendent on this issue."
