Tourists are drawn by the lure of Goa's beaches, but many fail to see the dangers when the waves roll on to the shore. And those who have underestimated the power of water have paid with their lives.

The beach can evoke fear in many people because of the unpredictable and powerful nature of the sea. Strong currents, sudden or rogue waves, and the potential to encounter marine life all contribute to this unease. Additionally, the fear of rip currents in the water is a common concern on many beaches across the State.

However, there are beaches in Goa which are earmarked as safe for swimming and one of them is Bambolim, which lies around 7 km from Panjim. Uncrowded, this beach stands out because of its calm waters and is a safe haven for those who want to enjoy the sea.

What makes Bambolim safe? Ashwin Tombat, who is a regular swimmer on this beach, explains, "Bambolim beach is a safe destination for swimming due to its unique geographical features. Being a bay within a bay, the beach is shielded from the more turbulent sea conditions, providing a protected environment for swimmers."

He adds, "Those who prefer to swim distances on this beach don't have to worry about rip currents that one can encounter on other long beaches like Calangute and Baga. The unique feature of the bay generates lateral currents which run parallel to the sea and in no way pose any danger to swimmers."

Its safe nature has made the Bambolim beach the meeting point for swimmers of Goa Open Water Swim Club every morning to practice and better their open water skills. Here, the swimmers soak in the freedom of the open water, feeling encouraged to push their limits together.

Swim coach Indrajeet Khadilkar, who is one of the core members of the swim club says, "There is no diffrence between swimming in the pool and on Bambolim beach where there are practically no waves. At times we encounter waves, but these are small and easily navigable, rarely interrupting the flow of practice."

The natural setting of the beach means Khadilkar doesn't have to worry about paying pool fees to conduct his classes.

"All those who swim at Bambolim appreciate nature and have gotten over their fear of open water. Here sports is the winner, and this is a place where nature and sports come on level platform," he adds.

Bambolim beach, with all its safety aspects, is one place that will allow you to explore your true potential if you feel that you want to take your swimming skills to the next level.
