VALPOI: A carcass of tiger was found inside the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary adjacent to Golavli village in Sattari taluka on Sunday. It was found in a decomposed state near the natural water source, about two-kilometres away from human habitation. Deputy Conservator of Forests, Vikas Dessai said, "As soon we got the news, our entire team rushed to the spot and we found a fully grown three to four-year-old tiger carcass from the forest inside the Mhadei wildlife sanctuary in a decomposed state. The cause of death could be not ascertained as the post-mortem will be conducted on Monday (January 6) morning. We have booked an offence and further investigation is on." Additional Conservator of Forest Nandkumar Parab, Range Forest Officer (RFO) Villas Gawas and environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar also visited the spot for a panchnama. Villagers suspect that last week two cows were killed by the same tiger. Last year, the office of the range forest officer had spotted the tiger in the Mhadei wildife sanctuary as it was captured in the cameras fitted in the forest. It is reportedly learnt that tigers travelling from nearby Bhimgad and Hanshi-Dandeli wildlife sanctuaries. According to environmentalist Rajendra Kerkar, the tiger must have died six to eight days back and it was seen on Sunday by the villagers who had gone for some religious rituals performed inside the forest. Since last two years, around five tigers have been sighted in Mhadei wildlife sanctuary, he said adding that the forest department should have deployed tiger protection teams there to take care of the big cats in these areas. A few years ago the forest department had started the exercise to establish the presence of tiger in the wildlife sanctuaries by using camera trapping method after the Union Ministry of Environment and Forest (MoEF) asked the Goa government to submit its proposal to declare Mhadei wildlife sanctuary as a tiger reserve park.
