SUBMERGED! Roads, fields and more under water in South Goa, amid IMD red alert

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a Red Alert for Goa till Saturday, and South Goa is already reeling under the incessant showers

It is still afternoon, and already several roads, fields and other areas in South Goa have gone underwater.

Paroda - Quepem

One of the major areas affected in South Goa is Paroda, Quepem. With the river overflowing, the roads connecting the place have gone underwater, making it dangerous for people travelling to Margao and surrounding areas.

People have been advised by the local bodies to stay indoors and not to venture outside unless absolutely necessary.

The Cuncolim-Margao highway is also submerged.

Margao

People in Margao were caught unawares when water began entering houses near the old market as the gutter (nullah) began overflowing.

Areas near the South Goa District Hospital and railway station were covered with water.

Most of the areas near the Arlem bypass have gone underwater. This area is covered with several fields and most of it is underwater currently; this could affect crops, which the farmers had recently planted.

South Goa’s Selaulim Dam is overflowing from its crest. This is scene in the first half of Day 1 of the IMD's red alert for Goa.

Rainfall recorded

Goa has so far recorded 169.7 mm average rainfall in the last 24 hours. However, Sanguem and Canacona report 233.4 mm and 213.8 mm rainfall, respectively, in the last 24 hours, (uptill 8.30 am), while Margao recorded 36.5mm.
