In light of recent reports of child sexual abuse by physical education teachers and coaches, the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) has announced the release of the 'Code of Conduct for Physical Education Teachers and Sports Coaches in Goa'.

This significant document establishes comprehensive guidelines to foster a safe, respectful, and supportive environment for children engaged in sports and physical education.

The code acts as a guide for appropriate behaviour and a protective measure, establishing clear expectations for conduct to create a safe and nurturing environment for all participants in sports and physical education.

The code specifically addresses the risks involved, aiming to protect young athletes from abuse and misconduct through the enforcement of stringent guidelines and measures of accountability.

The document includes particular provisions for the prevention of child sexual abuse, such as obligatory background checks, child protection training, and explicit reporting procedures.

These measures are designed to prevent abuse and guarantee prompt, effective responses to any incidents, underscoring the urgent need for action in light of reported abuses.

This initiative demonstrates a strong commitment to the safety of children and the promotion of an environment free from abuse where children can flourish.

Peter F Borges, Chairperson of the Goa State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, emphasised the significance of this initiative, stating, "This code of conduct signifies our dedication to protecting the rights and well-being of our children in sports and physical education. It represents a major step toward creating an environment where every child can prosper, shielded from harm and with abundant opportunities for excellence."

Key highlights of the code include respect for the rights of the child, professionalism, safety and wellbeing, positive reinforcement, inclusivity and non-discrimination, confidentiality, privacy and accountability.

The code encompasses a broad spectrum of topics, such as encouraging best practices, averting poor practices, providing practical guidance, maintaining confidentiality, and defining the duties of educators and coaches.

It applies to all physical education instructors and sports coaches operating within Goa's jurisdiction and will be enforced by the Directorate of Education, the Directorate of Youth and Sports Affairs, and the Sports Authority of Goa.

This initiative highlights the Commission's commitment to the comprehensive development of children, recognising the important role of sports and education.

It calls on all stakeholders to embrace and implement these guidelines, thereby positioning sports and physical education as vital contributors to the development of youth.
