MARGAO: Deputy Chief Minister Chandrakant Kavlekar on Thursday stated that if more power is given to the Zilla Panchayats then it will lessen the burden of MLAs and there is nothing harm in giving more powers to the Zilla Panchayats. He also assured that he will try his best to give more powers and grant to Zilla Panchayat in the near future. Speaking as the chief guest at the function organised by South Goa Zilla Panchayat at Margao, he further said that no one will lose anything if more powers are given to the Zilla panchayats. Chairman of South Goa Zilla Panchayat Navnath Naik, vice-chairman Chitra Phadte, deputy collector Raju Desai, chief officer Agnel Fernandes were also present at the function. "ZP members are trying their best to do the development works by using the power and funds they get from the government. They are providing basic infrastructure in their respective constituencies. I am of the opinion that they should get more powers and funds if so the burden of MLAs will also be lessened. By the way, more powers to ZP will on or the other way will be benefited to the MLAs,” he added. He further said that all the citizens should try their best to participate in 'Swachch Bharat' mission, which is initiated by the central government in the name of Mahatma Gandhi. He also said that candidates in Quepem constituency with regard to the ZP election will be decided by the party, he informed. "Many had raised their objection at the time when the government had decided to form the Zilla Panchayats in Goa. But now we can see lot of development because of the Zilla Panchayats and hence they deserve more powers and more funds. It is their right,” said Benaulim MLA Churchill Alemao who was also present at the function as the guest of honour. He also said that those who wish to do betterment of society should enter politics and do the works. It is a need of an hour. Chairman of South Goa Zilla Panchayat Navnath Naik in his address said that first and foremost the use of plastic bags should be banned. And all should make efforts to do so. "People should not oppose the projects which are coming up with regard to the waste treatment in Goa," he appealed. ZP members Chitra Phadte, Nelly Rodrigues, Ulash Tuenkar, Gyaneshwar Naik, Pushpa Ayya, Babita Naik Gaonkar, Mohan Verekar, Deepak Borkar, Jaideep Shirodkar, Fatima Gaonkar, Ruben Costa, Moreno Rebello, Edwin Cardozo, Kushali Velip and other members were felicitated by the chief guest.
