Monsoon arrives in Goa; heavy rain lashes state

Several locations across the state have been battered by incessant showers for the past two days

Following the onset of the monsoons, the state has been witnessing heavy showers since Saturday, with places like Valpoi, Quepem and Sanguem receiving heavy rainfall, leading to flooding in several areas.

Mormugao, Panjim, Old Goa and Mapusa have not been spared from the downpour, either. Mercury levels have dropped with the lowest temperature being recorded being 190C.

Thus far, Valpoi has recorded the highest rainfall of 110 mm, followed by Quepem and Sanguem. Panjim has received 60 mm of rainfall, with 18 June Road and Miramar circle getting waterlogged, as usual. Incidents of fallen trees, blocked roads and water entering homes have also been reported from across the state.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the heavy downpour is likely to continue till June 14, 2022.

After a three-day delay, the Southwest Monsoon finally arrived in Goa on Friday. While it was expected in the state on June 6, 2022, it reached on June 10, 2022 .

According to the IMD, the state received 19.1 mm of rain on the first day of the monsoons.

Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the sea till June 14, 2022 due to squally weather conditions.
