Margao municipal council seized goods from illegal roadside vendors in an anti-road encroachment drive on Sunday morning. The municipal inspector informed that these drives have been started to streamline and clear the roads which have been illegally encroached on by street vendors, which causes traffic congestion.

Since the past few days, Margao municipal staff have returned in their original form. They have commenced taking strict action against the illegal street vendors who do business by the roadside, encroaching on the road, which creates an obstruction for the commuters. Such illegal practices also increase the chances of road accidents.

When contacted, Margao municipality market inspector Santo Fernandes said that in the past few days anti-encroachment drives have been begun at multiple spots in their jurisdiction. "We have been instructed by the South Goa Collector, during a recent meeting, to take strict action against the roadside street vendors who obstruct roads," said Fernandes.

Further, giving more details of this drive, Fernandes stated that the municipal team cleared illegal encroachment by the street vendors from the wholesale fish market, near Ravindra Bhavan, Margao, and also from the ferry stalls.

“The seized commodities have been donated to a few orphanages in Margao, Colva and other places, whereas some commodities which have been seized from the ferry stalls will be given back to the stall vendors after imposing a penalty,” he added.
