Jaspal Singh, a 1996-batch Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram and Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre, took over as the new Director-General of Police (1996 Exmut Cadre) in Goa. After the appointment, he has made it clear that under his command there will be no tolerance of narcotics. "The new strategy to control traffic, drugs and cybercrime along with law and order in the state will be worked out in consultation with colleagues", Singh said after taking office.

This isn't Singh's first transfer to Goa. Two decades ago, he held the position of Assistant Superintendent of Police of the anti-narcotics cell before getting transferred to additional SP traffic, followed by additional SP south and then SP south. After a period of three years, he was transferred to Delhi. In 2017, he returned to Goa to take charge as the Inspector General. After the transfer of Director General of Police Muktesh Chander, the post which had been vacant for more than a year was managed by him during the Covid-19 period.

"When I first moved to Goa two decades ago, I was in charge of the anti-drug cell. A lot has changed now. A large number of drug cases have been brought under control. In the past, some tourists used to come to Goa for drugs, but now it has changed and tourists are flocking to Goa for its culture, beauty, natural beauty and security," Singh said.

"With the assumption of office today, the next course of action against drugs will be decided after a review with my colleagues," Singh added.

'Digital technology awareness is needed to prevent cyber crime'

Cybercrimes have been on the rise in the state for the past few months. Speaking to the press, Singh emphasized the importance of technical knowledge in the investigation of such crimes. "If a crime is committed, it can be traced back to the suspect's handprints. But cybercrime has no strings attached. Digital platforms, as well as computer-based search, are the work of technology. For this, training will be given to the police officers who have knowledge in this field. It is also important to raise awareness about digital technology", said Singh.

"There will be more emphasis on cybercrime, traffic as well as law and order. Goa Police ranks among the best police in the country. All sorts of challenges will be faced to maintain this standard. As Goa is a tourist destination, there is a huge influx of domestic and foreign tourists. Steps will be taken to make Goa a safe place for tourists, not for drugs," said Singh.
