Goa government announces power tariff rebate for 5.60 lakh consumers

Goa government has given Rs 120 crore subsidy from the state treasury to not burden the consumers with an additional power tariff hike.

The state government on Wednesday has announced a power tariff rebate for this financial year till March 31, 2022, and approved Rs 120 crore subsidy from the state treasury to not burden the consumers with an additional tariff hike.

Speaking to the media post the cabinet meeting, Cheif Minister Pramod Sawant said the cabinet has decided to keep abeyance the tariff order for the financial year except for levy of the tariff of Rs 3.50 per unit as per consumer category ‘Electric Vehicle Charging Station

The JERC tariff order, which had approved a hike of around 5.21 per cent, was supposed to be implemented from June 1 for the financial year 20-21 but could not be implemented due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Goa has around 5.64 consumers who will benefit from this decision.

The state government had kept the tariff order in abeyance up last year too. According to the cabinet note, the general public is facing difficulties due to cascading effect of the downturn in tourism and hospitality sectors as well as other activities. Implementing the tariff order issues in the financial year 2021-22 at this juncture would further increase the burden on consumers.

Reacting to Government’s decision, Delhi CM and Aam Aadmi Party Supremo Arvind Kejriwal congratulated the people of Goa, AAP along with the people of Goa had an agitation. As a result, today, the Goa government provided a subsidy to stop a hike in electricity tariffs. Without having a single MLA, AAP has managed to stop the hike in electricity would be provided free,” he tweeted on Wednesday.
