Niasso further expressed surprise that he has seen that for several years these people are staying here by building houses and for all these years nobody came forward to claim the ownership of the land.

He asked why the complainant had waited for so many years and turned up now. Local residents told reporters that they have been allowed by some prominent person to stay on this land.

The residents further said that there are several other places in Margao that are illegal, so why should they be tagged illegal? Residents also said that although they do not have ownership documents of the land, they receive electricity and water bills.
