Educationist Nisha D'Cunha is no more

Teachers, parents and students of Nisha's Playschool and Shiksha Niketan were all left shell-shocked when news poured in that their founder and principal Nisha D’Cunha passed away early Saturday morning after a massive heart attack.

An educationist par excellence and wife of well-known and celebrated architect Gerard da Cunha, Nisha was a role model in the field of education and was known for her foundation of play-method learning to draw out creativity from her students.

She was also responsible for moulding her students into sensitive human beings and responsible citizens.

According to close family friends, she passed away at her home in Torda, Salvador do Mundo, where her educational institutions are also based.

People in the education sector, who have been close to her for close to four decades, said Nisha's passing away is a big loss to the education sector in a big way as she was an educationist par excellence.

Funeral service

The funeral is scheduled for 3 pm on Tuesday, August 9, at Shiksha Niketan and more details are awaited. The family has requested that no condolence visits be paid.

The schools will remain shut on Monday and Tuesday. On Wednesday, too, the schools will remain closed due to the panchayat elections and reopen on Thursday, August 11.

Animal Rescue Squad rescues bison trapped in water tank

The Animal Rescue Squad (ARS) finally succeeded in rescuing the young Indian Bison by 12.30 pm on Saturday. The animal was trapped in an empty water tank at Khandola since Friday night.

The operation to free the bison lasted one-and-half hour.

The animal, happy and nervous at the same time, safely exited the tank and ran into the wild.

Amrut Singh of ARS was involved in the rescue along with his daughter, Akshata Singh, and team members Uttam Pangam and Sameer Asnodkar.

Singh informed that the bison was heavy to lift, so they dug the water tank and made a pathway for it to exit. He said the bison didn't have any injuries on its body.

Goan soil for new Parliament bldg reaches Delhi

Chief Minister Pramod Sawant on Saturday handed over the soil from Goa to be used in the construction of the new Parliament building in Delhi.

The CM handed the soil, which is taken from all parts of Goa, to the Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Kishan Reddy.

Late Friday evening, the CM left with the soil for Delhi after attending the Goa Marathi Film Festival at the Inox in Panjim.

It is learned that the soil was collected from places of religious and historical importance in all 40 constituencies.

The soil from all over the State was brought to the Maquinez palace in Panjim where it was mixed after conducting a religious ritual.

The CM handing over Goan soil, to be used in the construction of the new Parliament building, to Union Minister for Culture and Tourism Kishan Reddy in New Delhi.

Bison trapped in empty water tank, rescue on

A young Indian bison accidentally fell into an empty water tank at Khandola, Savai road. The Animal Rescue Squad team members are at the site to rescue the animal.

The Animal Rescue Sqaud President Amrut Singh informed GT the animal was grazing at the time of the incident near the Green Marshal building outside a compound wall near the Savai road. It was trapped since Friday night. Singh further added the tank may have been left open by some manual laborers who were at work at the site the previous day.

He said the team is busy rescuing the animal under the guidance of Ali Shaikh. Ponda Reserve Forest Officer’s (RFO) team is on its way to the site to assist in the operation. So far, no visible injuries have been seen on the animal, Singh informed.

Woman suicide attempt, dead child baffle police

In a shocking incident, a 38-year-old woman from Chicalim allegedly murdered her 13-month-old daughter and tried to commit suicide by cutting her wrist, and later tried jumping off the Zuari bridge early morning on Saturday.

As per the information provided by DySP Rajesh Kumar, the woman tried to commit suicide twice. Initially, she tried cutting her wrist with a sharp object. The bloodstains were visible on the floor of the room inside her house.

After a failed suicide attempt, the second time she tried jumping off the Zuari bridge but was rescued by the coast guards and the Dilip Buildcon staff.

DySP Kumar further said that after her rescue, a call was made to her husband informing him about the incident. The husband checked inside the house and to his utter shock found their 13-month-old daughter dead lying on the bed.

Meanwhile, the woman is recuperating at the Goa Medical College and Hospital.

Police said more details will be available after the woman gives her statement. The exact reason behind this shocking incident is unknown.

As per information given by the Vasco Police Inspector Kapil Nayak, the woman, Nimisha Valson (38), has been booked under section 302 of IPC.

He said statements of the woman, husband and others will be recorded and the case is being investigated in all possible angles.
