An international company retrenched 130 contract staff recently. The uncertainty regarding their livelihood in relation to the renewal of their job contracts has left the contract staff worried. They claim that 50 people non-Goans have been inducted by this company, leaving these 130 contract staff high and dry.
It is an unfair and contradictory situation wherein a week ago the state government organised a mega job fair and assured thousands of youth from Goa job opportunities. But for the past few days, 130 experienced and skilled Goan youth, who were employed with a private company on a three-year contract, have been retrenched by the company.
When local reporters contacted the youth who were protesting outside the company's plant, they stated that they were on a three-year contract and now this private company has retrenched 130 of them. The company has cited the reasons of recurrent losses and cost-cutting with regard to the retrenchment of the 130 Goan staff.
One of the protestors questioned how the company could hire 50 skilled and unskilled workforce from outside Goa when it is supposedly incurring a loss. Since the company is located in Goa, it is Goan youth who should be given priority in employment, and therefore the contract staff should be reinstated.
