Asthma affects millions of people every year. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the disease affected an estimated 262 million people in 2019, and caused 461000 deaths. Asthma is also the most common chronic disease among children.
In order to provide a better quality of life for patients suffering from severe asthma, Manipal Hospital, Goa, on the occasion of World Asthma Day launched the 'severe asthma clinic'.
The purpose was to create a systematic assessment and to offer advanced biologics, immunotherapy, and bronchial thermoplasty services.
Interventional Pulmonologist, Manipal Hospitals, Goa, Dr Prabhu Prasad NC explained that not all asthma was the same, “There is much more than drugs for treating asthma. Patients with severe asthma need special attention to alleviate their sufferings."
"We take it one step further in this precision clinic, where these particular groups of patients are systematically assessed and also classify asthma in greater depth in the clinic, so as to determine the patient’s asthma phenotype which will help us understand the type of asthma, the type of severe asthma, and whether the patient qualifies for asthma biologics therapy or Bronchial Thermoplasty," he added.
This group of severe asthma patients, who are on biological therapy, will be given the option to visit the clinic every two or four weeks to receive the necessary injections. The clinic will be operational every Wednesday and Saturday from 3 pm to 5 pm.
The inauguration of the clinic was done by HoD, Department of Pulmonary Medicine , Goa Medical College, Dr Uday Kakodkar.
