Advocates Associations from Ponda and Vasco have come out in support of Adv Gajanan Sawant, strongly condemning the attack on him. They have demanded a thorough investigation by the Crime Branch of Goa police.
Several lawyers from Ponda gathered outside the Ponda court and protested against an alleged assault on Adv Gajanan Sawant by a policeman.
A lawyer informed that their association has demanded that the FIR in this matter should be transferred to the Crime Branch of Goa. Secondly, the four policemen allegedly involved in this assault should be suspended.
Thirdly, there should be an inquiry against the police inspector who gave instructions in the matter, and lastly, a magisterial inquiry into the entire episode should be initiated.
Another senior lawyer expressed great shock about this incident and questioned what would be the condition of a common person who lacks the knowledge of the law if it could happen to a lawyer.
Meanwhile, the Vasco Advocates Association also came out in solidarity with Adv Gajanan Sawant. Adv Chetan Palyekar, during a press conference on Monday evening in Vasco, condemned the brutal attack on Adv Sawant by some policemen attached to the Porvorim police station.
During the press briefing, a Vasco-based lawyer told reporters that on December 8, Adv Sawant was called by his client to his residence. Upon reaching there, when Adv Sawant tried to intervene in a matter at that relevant time, the police reportedly assaulted him. This caused bodily injuries to Adv Sawant.
Further, the association termed this act unacceptable in a civilised society. A policeman is supposed to protect the people of the country. But here the law protector is violating the law.
