In a world where women often face societal pressure and safety concerns, one woman boldly is rewriting the narrative.

Piyali Chatterjee embarked on a 6,000 kilometre solo motorcycle ride to Delhi which was flagged off on November 15, 2024 not only to challenge stereotypes but also champion women’s safety and promote hidden gems of Goa.

Piyali's is a journey with a purpose. It is not just a personal adventure, but a mission. “Many women are pressurised not to go anywhere alone,” she says and adds, “I want to spread awareness that with the right precautions, safety measures, and tools, women can travel freely and safely, not just in India but across the world.”

Her ride is a testament to empowerment, proving that women can embrace independence while prioritising safety.

Her ride is a testament to empowerment, proving that women can embrace independence while prioritising safety. Armed with a carefully-planned route, safety devices, and her biking community’s unwavering support, she is determined to inspire others to overcome their fears and societal limitations.

Promoting awareness & safety

As a solo rider, she emphasises the importance of vigilance and preparation. Her advice for women traveling alone is practical and empowering:

• Always stay aware of your surroundings, even when using mobile devices.

• Avoid shortcuts and stick to well-lit, populated roads.

• Prepare for emergencies by carrying essential tools and learning basic vehicle maintenance.

To ensure safety during her ride, Piyali meticulously planned her route three months in advance, factoring in road conditions, climate, and potential challenges. With her bikers' club tracking her location just in case of breakdowns, she is assured of making through any challenge.

Redefining Goa

A key focus of her journey was to change the perception of Goa. “Many think of Goa as synonymous with parties, alcohol, and drugs. But Goa is so much more. It’s about serene beaches, islands, wildlife sanctuaries, traditional food, and rich cultural festivals like São João and the Carnival,” she adds.

As an ambassador for Goa’s eco-tourism, she aims to showcase its positive aspects, encouraging families, solo travellers, and even pet owners to explore the State’s beauty responsibly.

The ride along

Her journey will cover 18 cities in 36 days, starting and ending in Goa. The circuit includes Kolhapur, Pune, Mumbai, Surat, Ahmedabad, Udaipur, Jaipur, Delhi, Amritsar, Ludhiana, Chandigarh, Indore, Nagpur, Nashik, and Shirdi.

Over three months, she prepared physically and mentally for the challenge, incorporating a fitness regimen, modifying her bike, and ensuring she had all essentials like a first-aid kit, clothes, spare parts, gadgets, tools and a GoPro for documenting the adventure.

Additionally, she completed a course on basic bike maintenance to ensure she was fully equipped for the journey.

Riding for a cause

This ride marks her longest solo journey, launched on her birthday, a symbolic celebration of independence and purpose. “I am riding for women’s safety and to promote Goa tourism. What better way to celebrate than this?” she says, brimming with pride.

As she blazes trails across India, she leaves behind a legacy of courage, empowerment, and hope for women everywhere.
